Lauren Hurst, Senior Exercise Specialist and author of North of Forty: Inspiring Stories of Senior Athletes, recently had the honor of guest speaking at the University of Hartford. She was invited to address students in the university’s Geriatric Lecture and Lab Course—an essential part of the Physical Therapy program that focuses on caring for and understanding the unique physical needs of older adults.
Lauren shared insights from her book, chronicling the athletic journeys of adults over 40 who continue to thrive through movement and sport. Drawing from her own story as an aging athlete and longtime fitness professional, she emphasized the power of exercise as a means of physical health and a vital tool for independence, mental well-being, and longevity.
"It was a joy to speak with students who will soon be working directly with older populations," Lauren said. "I wanted them to walk away with a deeper appreciation for what their future patients are capable of—and how movement and being physically active can be a source of empowerment, regardless of age.
As the population ages, physical therapists' role in promoting healthy aging has never been more important. Lauren’s visit offered an inspiring and personal perspective on what’s possible when we invest in lifelong physical activity.
